The origins of the music style known as dub go back to Jamaica in the 70’s. at that time, the reggae scen was bursting with musicians, producers and studios creating loads of LP’s and 45’s.

Dub music emerged from that context. Initially, some singles started featuring an instrumental version on the b-side, where voice was totally or partially taken out and the bass and drums had a higher relevance and more effects.

The technological evolution resulted in improvements like the echo and reverb effects which increased largely the quality of the tracks and expended the sonic possibilities for musicians and producers.

Today dub is considered a music genre rather than a variation or remix of reggae tracks.

While Lee “Scratch” Perry is the more famous pioneer of dub, King Tubby is considered the true father of dub music.

Augustus Pablo was also a very well known precursor of dub music. More recent and also very famous dub producers include Mad Professor, Asian Dub Foundation, Zion Train, Dub Division, Dub Pistols, Sly & Robbie and Long Beach Dub All Stars.

King Tubby, the father of dub, was a sound engineer who quickly got the reputation of an expert in the mixing art. He started making dub productions in his own home, through a sound system he built called Home Town Hi-Fi.

One of the most prolific results of dub was the possibility to originate several versions from one single. One could use the same “riddim” in dozens of variations, adding or taking effects, instruments and even real sounds of nature.

The end of the 90’s saw a rebirth of the dub scene with artists like Mad professor, Adrian Sherwood, Zion Train and Jah Warrior doing their tracks with a sense of tradition and at the same time a lot more freshness.

Today dub music is not only a recurrent aspect of dub tracks but it is used in a wide variety of dance music genres like drum n’ bass, jungle, trip hop, hip hop and dance music in general.
